What is Talis

Talis is a privately owned software company whose mission is to apply technology and data to help transform education. Talis Aspire enables academics and librarians to find,  bookmark, manage and track usage of recommended learning resources for students. The aggregated data in the Talis Network consists of over 1.5 million resources (textbooks, ebooks, journals, documents, videos and web pages), recommended by academics from all subject areas, and used by over 1 million students around the world. The data and the connections between users, subjects, courses, and resources represent an Education Graph which enables collective intelligence features that puts the knowledge of the whole network to work for the user, in order to help improve teaching and learning.

Board Members

Dave Errington - PNGDave Errington


Dave joined Talis in June 2003 from SurfKitchen Inc, a Venture Capital backed wireless mobile software startup based in Zurich and London. As Chief Technology Officer he worked with the founders and management team to refine their technology and business strategy to position the company for growth with early adopting customers, strategic partners and investors. Previously, he worked for The Sage Group plc (one of the world’s leading business software providers) as CTO and before that as Research and Development Director for Sage (UK) Ltd. After joining Talis in June 2003, Dave took responsibility for the company’s products, services and infrastructure before taking the role of CEO in September 2004. He leads the senior management team and as part of the executive team, is responsible for defining and communicating the company’s strategy. Dave has a BSc in Mathematics and a Postgraduate qualification in Mathematics and Physical Education.

Justin Leavesley - PNGJustin Leavesley


Justin joined Talis in January 2000 from Morse Group plc, a leading European technology supplier. After receiving his Master of Physics from Oxford University, Justin joined IBM working first in the defence and aerospace sector for the British Army and later for Natwest Bank. Justin left IBM to join an internet start up company based at Birmingham University where he was involved in product development, marketing and business strategy. Justin, is responsible for the Applications division of Talis and for Group strategy.

Chris ClarkeChris Clarke


Chris joined Talis in 2006 following a number of years freelancing in the enterprise application space. Prior to that, Chris was a consultant in the eBusiness practice at Oracle, working on banking and central government engagements. On joining, Chris lead the development of the company’s first SaaS product, before going on to lead the projects that became today’s Talis Aspire product set. During this period, a more modern lean approach to product development was introduced. Chris is responsible for defining and communicating the company’s technical strategy.

Tom Hawkings - PNGTom Hawkins


Tom joined Talis in September 2011 from ComQi (formerly EnQii), a VC-backed digital signage software and services group based in London, Jerusalem, New York and Hong Kong. At EnQii he worked with the board on finance raising, strategy and planning and the merger of EnQii with Minicom Digital Signage to form ComQi.

Previously Tom was CFO of NESTA (the National Endowment for Science, Technology and the Arts), managing their £300m endowment and as part of the team effecting a major change programme and the creation of a £50m evergreen venture fund. Before joining NESTA, Tom was a divisional CFO with Lagardère in London and Paris, joining after the successful sale of a venture-backed telecoms business to the Paris listed media group.

Tom is a prize-winning chartered accountant. He has Masters degrees in Mathematics from Cambridge and in Management (Sloan Masters) from London Business School.
